Stacking the Competition: Junk Removal Services

The junk removal business is a very fragmented one. It ranges from guys with a pick up truck, small mom and pop shops, legitimate corporations, to full blown nationwide franchises. When choosing what junk removal service you want to use, ask yourself the following questions:

1. How much do they cost in comparison to the size of their truck?
This is very important because junk removal companies bill on volume so your cost comparison should be based on how much their equipment can haul. The majority of junk removal service companies operate (for example 1800 got-junk) trucks that have 400 cubic feet capacity. E-Cycle Environmental operates trucks with 1536 cubic feet capacity.

2. Do I want the junk removal service to have professional, insured employees?
You want to make sure that the organization has general liability, workers compensation and auto insurance. If they are moving electronics, batteries or light bulbs, make sure they have pollution insurance because these are regulated wastes.

3. Do I want my junk to be recycled or donated?
A lot of junk can be recycled or donated and most items fall into the recycling category. Does the junk company base itself around a green cause. Some companies say they recycle, but really, they just send it to landfill. A good indicator if they truly are recycling is the cost of pick up. If a company is truly recycling your items, the pick up cost will be less. In order for a junk removal service to recycle your items, they need a good sized back end infrastructure. Many operations are just a guy with a truck so they will land fill due to lack of resources.

4. Is the junk removal company a franchise?
This is important because you as the customer have to pay extra to cover franchisee royalty fees. You pay for the normal logistic and disposal fees but you also pay for invisible, extra charges that are baked into the total.
